Deck and Load Lines.

14.-(1.) All British or Colonial ships registered in the Marking of Colony, (except ships under 25 tons, pleasure yachts, ships eck-lines. not trading or plying for hire and ships employed solely as 1891 and tugs), shall be permanently and conspicuously marked with M.S.A. 1894, lines of not less than twelve inches in length and one inch sec. 437.) in breadth, painted longitudinally on each side amidships,

or as near thereto as is preticable, and indicating the posi

tion of each deck which is above water.

(a.) The upper edge of each of the deck lines must

be level with the upper side of the deck plank next

the waterway at the place of marking.

(b.) The deck-lines must be white or yellow on a dark

ground, or black on a light ground.

(e.) In this section the expression "amidships" means the middle of the length of the load water-line as measured from the fore side of the stem to the aft side of the stern-post.

As regards sub-section 1 of section 14 the Board of Trade Minute is as follows:--- "It is presumed that the word 'British' in sub-clause 1 refers like the word 'Colonial' only to ships registered in the Colony. If not, should there not be a saving for ships marked in accordance with the Merchant Ship- ping Act."

To that the Harbour Master replies, "British" applies only to ships registered the Colony,
